Congress Needs To Take Budget Accounting Course

How naive do the Republicans think we are? The 2017 tax cut is set to expire at the end of 2025. According to current law, if Congress extends the law, it is considered a tax cut, and if they don't, it's seen as a tax increase. However, the wise individuals in Congress claim that the 2017 tax cut was always intended to be permanent, so it wouldn't contribute to future budget deficits. Yet, common sense suggests that if budget projections assume more tax revenue will be collected after 2025 because tax rates will revert to pre-2017 levels, extending the cut would mean collecting less. Only in Washington do people attempt to construct the illusion that continuing the 2017 tax cut doesn't expand the budget deficit. Maybe voters should insist that anyone aspiring to a political position in Washington must take a budget accounting course.
